From planning and design to construction and materials, we'll walk you through every step of the process to help you create a beautiful deck.

Step 2: Digging Holes/Excavating

How do you map out a deck?

Get utility locates (see Step 1 of Building Your Deck)
Start the process by using string and batter boards. Batter boards are temporary frames, set beyond the corners of a planned foundation at precise elevations. These batter boards are then used to hold the layout string lines to indicate the limits of your deck structure.

Where do I put my posts?

If your deck requires concrete footings, your deck design will tell you how many and where your posts need to be placed. Don’t have a deck design? Set up an appointment with your Build-It-Better coach to get one completed for free!

How wide should post holes be?

Post holes should be 2-3 times the width of a post. For a 4 inch post the hole should be a minimum of 8-12 inches wide.
Note: digging holes is not necessary when using deck blocks.

How do I dig the holes?

Holes can be dug with a clam shell digger or a powered auger.

How deep do I dig the holes?

For good stability, deck footings need to reach below the frost line. In Southern Ontario, this means that posts should reach at approximately 4′ into the ground. Dig the holes 6″ deeper than necessary to add a layer of gravel for additional stability.
