Step 3: Pouring Concrete

Do I need to use concrete?

Concrete is the go-to product because it is strong and durable.
There are alternative products such as foam that can reduce labor and handling costs.
It is highly recommended that you do not set posts directly in soil for 2 reasons:

  1. Stability. The increased surface area provided by concrete or foam reduces the amount of PSI (pounds per square inch) that is transferred to the soil, providing a more stable post.
  2. Rotting. Wood is never to be in direct contact with dirt. A post exposed to soil can rot out in a matter of a few years, causing you to replace your post prematurely.

Do I need to use a sonotube?

No, but it will help hold concrete in place when setting posts.
It is an option to bell out the bottom by lifting the sonotube gently while filling with concrete. This provides more resistance against the uplift forces caused by frost and will add extra stability to a footing.

How do I mix concrete? Do I need to mix it?

This all depends on the type you buy. Regular stone mix needs to be thoroughly mixed prior to pouring it into the hole. Fence n’ post concrete can be poured in the hole dry with water added afterward. Fence n’ post also has a quicker cure time. Fast setting concrete should not be used in this application as it is not structurally appropriate.

How do I make the posts level?

Use a level or post level and ensure all sides are level. Reinforce posts while concrete cures if necessary.

How long does concrete take to cure?

Refer to manufacturer instructions.
