From planning and design to construction and materials, we'll walk you through every step of the process to help you replace or install your siding.

Step 4: Select Your Material

Wood Siding

Wood siding can provide a traditional or a contemporary look for your home with a more customized result. There are several profiles and trim options to choose from, along with ease of installation. You can get wood siding in long horizontal pieces, or it can be shaped to suit your individual design needs. That’s the beauty of wood. You may want the look of clapboard – overlapping pieces of wood installed horizontally – or shingles – smaller pieces of wood overlapping like a shingled roof. Wood siding is a good choice for this façade.

It is both strong and natural-looking. While wood siding is available in a various of colours (custom colours available to match your paint colour selection fan deck), we’d recommend choosing lighter shades over dark, to achieve a better expansion counter. That is, dark colors expand and contract more than light colors will with the weather.

Wood siding requires more maintenance than other siding options to keep it looking its best. It could initially be factory finished or you could manually apply a clear sealer, paint, or a semi-transparent stain. Your choice of finish determines the maintenance schedule.

It’s usually recommended reapplying clear finishes every two to five years. Semi-transparent stains should be reapplied every three years, and using paint can stretch the timing from ten to fifteen years.

Raw unstained material and factory finishes are available. The higher cost of wood siding — from $8-12 per square foot — is incentive to maintain the investment.

Warranty varies from 5-50 years on colour and wood decay.

Metal Siding

Metal siding is frequently associated with retro and modern style type buildings. Installing metal siding for your home can give it a unique appeal. Metal siding can be beautiful, worry-free, and sustainable.

Several profiles and colour options, along with standard and custom trims, are available. It is lightweight, durable, storm-resistant, installs quickly, has colour-matched trims and accessories, won’t rot, warp, crack, peel, chip, or burn. Mould and mildew resistant and impervious to insects. It withstands wind-driven rain, high winds, and hail.

Metal siding can be factory cut to exact lengths, which reduces waste. Furthermore, it is maintenance-free and great for both wall and roof applications. Unfortunately, the metal modestly fades over time. The pricing ranges from $15-$25/SF and can have a warranty of up to 50 years.

Vinyl Siding

Today’s mainstream siding material is vinyl. It is the most economical type of siding. Attractive profiles feature a satin finish wood-grain texture and complement a variety of architectural styles. Options include a wide variety of profiles and colours. Vinyl siding not only guards your home, it can also make a statement.

Additionally, vinyl is a complete self-flushing water-exclusion system. It is made to be water repellent and durable in any kind of weather. Its lightweight footprint makes it easy to install, which minimizes expenses. Vinyl is low-maintenance and requires only periodic cleaning with a power washer every few years – more if you want it to really shine. Fading may occur, more so, with darker colours. Pricing ranges from $3-$6/ square foot. Warranty varies by series, up to lifetime warranty, transferable, with hail and fade coverage.
